November 26th – Humpday

We awoke in the morning for a landing at Port Charcot. The weather was again not ideal and I was still a bit tired. We made land near a small group of nesting penguins and there was an optional climb up a small hill. I decided to conserve my energy for the afternoon ski, so i hung out with the penguins for a while and plopped myself down, made a snow angel and had a little nap. After a bit, I was feeling a little cold and damp from the snowfall and decided to head back to the ship a touch early for a pre-lunch nap.

The afternoon ski was a good one. We skipped a landing at an old whaling station and hit the mountain. I was really starting to hit my stride on the skis at this point and was much more comfortable. It was quite a climb up for about 2 hours. I was feeling the burn and from the top we had an excellent view of the ship below. The people back on the ship said we looked incredible as little black specs on top of the huge glacial face. The way down was the smoothest yet, I finally allowed myself to glide and slide easily down. I realized that I actually do know how to ski and it had just been a while.

After dinner about 20 people headed off to go camping on the ice, I was a bit jealous as I had been on the waiting list to no avail. It was, however, pretty nasty weather so I took some solace in that. I had a few drinks in the bar with our skiing guide and a friend. I went to sleep early to try to write and read for a while, that would turn out in retrospect to be restful but not the best use of my time.
